How Orion® Works
-
Using an integrated platform frees up your time so you can focus on the science. No more having to change file formats or transfer files from one application to another. You can use a 2D/3D visualizer, access spreadsheets, visualize plots, and analyze your results directly in Orion. The Orion Platform allows you to use available OpenEye methods, as well as your in-house or third-party vendor methods, in one environment.
-
Although no system is completely foolproof, cloud data is probably more secure than information stored on conventional hard drives or in-house storage. The Orion Platform runs encrypted as an Amazon Virtual Private Cloud (VPC), the gold standard in cloud-infrastructure security. Your data always is secure and intact, at rest and in transit.
-
You can specify the preferred location to securely store your data and minimize latency time. Depending on what servers you use, you can set access based on login credentials and user permissions. You have full control of what data you want shared and with whom.
-
It is inexpensive to switch to using Orion cloud computing. Orion’s proprietary scheduler engine optimizes your computations on AWS. Since you only pay for what you use, Orion customers find that they have achieved significant cost savings for their organizations by switching to Orion.
-
While costs can vary greatly depending on the size of calculations and the scientific methods employed, Orion has been optimized for performance and cost-savings. For example, a 3D-shape-screening calculation against two billon molecules will cost you only in the tens of dollars.
-
Real-time collaboration within Orion allows you to share your data and your analysis, instantaneously, with your team members. In Orion, you and your team members can simultaneously view ligands and proteins in 2D/3D, draw and edit molecules, and analyze data using familiar spreadsheets, graphs and plots, all while annotating your results, without delays, and without the need to send files back and forth.
-
There are various factors you can use to decide whether a managed service stack or Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) stack is the right choice for your organization. As a guideline, if you need turnkey solutions, you are likely to benefit from Orion SaaS stack. If you need to do in-house method development, the managed service stack provides you the flexibility you require. Please contact our team and we will be happy to assess your computation needs and find the right fit for your organization.
-
The Orion Platform and Science Suites are ready to use out of the box. Currently available turnkey solutions include Small Molecule Discovery Suite (for your structure- and ligand-based design needs), Formulations Suite (for your crystal structure prediction needs), and Antibody Discovery Suite (for your antibody library design needs). OpenEye continues to develop new scientific solutions for the Orion suite of products. Contact us to learn what is in development, or how we can custom design solutions for your needs.
-
Many scientific solutions are cloud-hosted (also referred to as cloud-enabled) versus cloud-based. To ensure that your organization is getting maximum benefit using cloud computing, look for platforms that are built with cloud-native design, such as Orion. OpenEye is one of the first scientific computing companies that has attained the AWS High Competency Computing (HPC) partner designation, which recognizes that OpenEye has both the deep industry experience and the required expertise to help customers attain scalable, flexible, and cost-effective solutions.
-
Orion allows you to monitor your compute costs, updated in real-time, down to the cents. You can track the stage of your computation, how long it has been running for, and what the compute cost is. In addition, the cost-alert feature within Orion provides you with an extra layer of cost protection. You set the threshold cost and the email notification setting. You will be notified before you exceed the cost, and you have control to terminate or extend the compute job.
-
The Orion Platform is designed to be a flexible, open platform. You can integrate outside applications and systems using Python. Whether you like to do it yourself, or have the OpenEye Custom Solutions team do it for you, we can assess your needs and provide you with the integration solutions. Contact us.

The cloud is cost-effective. It eliminates the need for large capital investments in infrastructure and shifts costs to the operating budget. It is convenient, providing easy access to data for workers and managers, regardless of location. OpenEye’s cloud team is available 24/7 to handle security, backups, upgrades, and maintenance of your Orion platform.
